Homework

The kids are doing homework and it amazes me how much busy work they get for homework. Zeke has to use 5 of his spelling words in sentences, do a math worksheet and re-read his reading story. Samantha has a math worksheet and has to write the definitions to her work in cursive. Ivelisse has a math homework and has to keep reading for mythology. This is just the stuff that makes it home there is other homework that they finish at school. I wish they gave him homework that involves them thinking and drawing conclusions.
It takes about 30 to 40 minutes for them to do their homework which is not a lot but after a busy day; it just seems like too much. It leaves them hardly anytime to play outside or even inside before it is time for supper. It also surprises me that Zeke seems to always have more homework than the girls. Also all my kids are smart kids (they are all in the gifted program)if it takes them that long, how long does it take the average or special ed child?
My opinion is that homework should be creative work that extends what they have learned in school, not busy work.
Okey I am done ranting....

You, know so far so good in the homework department. A. is the only one so far that get much in the way of homework and it is normally some math homework reinforcing the lesson of the day. Spelling they have to do twice a week, and then occasionally some reading comprehension kind of work. They have to read for 15 minutes a day (we blow past that) and then weekly do a different activity related to the reading. (breaking down a chapter of the child selected book into its component parts...which ties into the creative writing they are practicing at school.
