A couple of weeks ago we reorganize the kids chores lists and started a whole family night system. We had the same system for years and as the kids have gotten a bit older it has not worked as well anymore but I wasnt ready to give up on it just yet. So instead I modified it!
In the past, the kids got tokens for doing one chore and their room cleaning and they could redeem the token for an acitivty or object. Also we always read them a bible story and a book, prayed with them and tucked them in. Ive is old enough that she had stopped coming to story time as we always called the night routine and she wanted to be prayed with independently in her bed. She wants to do her own devotions and not listen to "little kids" bible story.
The new routine is more complex but so far it seems to work well. We gave the kids a "ledger", in which they write their jobs for the week (they all have three jobs). The first job is the standard clean your room and do all your laundry. It is checked by parents once a week. The other job is a daily household chore (dishes, wash sheets, clean table, feed pets, etc.) They are assigned one per week that changes each week. The third chore they have to do is help with helping the house run smoothly. Two of the children have to lead either a family devotions or a spanish lesson 3 times each week. The third child is meal helper and helps plan and cook meals 3 times a week. The kids really like it! They get paid 10 dollars each a week if they complete all their chores. $3 goes to spending money, $3 goes to savings (which they can spend once every 3 months), $3 goes to taxes paid to mom and dad (which we put into a college fund for them) and $1 goes to tithe. We have a meal together as a family every Saturday and the parents lead the devotions that day and each kids get paid (according to how well they did their jobs). The kids have to put how much they earned in their ledger and they have to deduct from that as they spend it. It seems to give us more time together and the kids seem to have really gotten the hang of it. So even though no one likes chores, it is one way to make it fun and teach them a bit about money at the same time.
